I want to use this to recover the contents of a hard drive.
The PC hardware died but the hard drive is fine. the problem is it is xp and has a username associated with it so my other pc's wont let me see or retrieve any of the content (actually I can get to a few folders but not all). I tried creating a user account with the same credentials on the new PC thinking it would allow me to access the drive but so far no luck. I hope ERD commander lets me in.
Are there alternative methods to accessing this data you can recommend?
There are two additional files in the rar file included with the image, a .ccd file and a .sub file. What are those for? Do I need them?

Those .ccd and .sub file created after I created the image file. So, I leave it undisturbed (scared might cause instability to image file if I deleted it)more infos on .ccd and .sub
Just burn the image file onto a empty CD using Nero or other image burning software. :)
Yup ERD Commander let you access to the drive.
Regarding alternative methods, I read you can use Linux distro but unsure whether all Linux able to do it.

in order to open .rar files you need WinRAR software.Download WinRAR
After installed the Winrar, extract the .rar files.
Then, burn the image file (.iso) onto a CD using Nero or other Image Burning softwares.

I don't think so. The Winternals already a bootable disc if you burned it in correct method and software.

I'm desperate for help! I followed the instructions including having to change the .img file to .iso and then burnt using alcohol 120%. But my PC with the graphics problem doesn't seem to pick up the boot CD and goes straight to the Windows worm startup screen and then blanks out. Have I copied the correct file? i.e there were 3 in the ERd Commander unzipped and I burnt the .img to .iso. Hope you can help!
You need burn .iso..
Once you are in Alcohol 120%, it will automatically pick up the appropriate files to burn on CD
the bios now recognises the disk burnt with the iso image. but now it says it is not boot media. am i doing something wrong with the iso image? when i extracted the erd files, one was .img spo i renamed that to .iso and the image was created. is it necessary to get the .ccd file on the boot cd too?
Once you correctly burnt the image onto a CD..it will be a data disc just like any other softwares CDs you have..
It is advised do not alter or delete any additional files till you burnt the .iso file onto a CD using Image Burning method and not as Data Disa Burning method..

In that zipped file, you can see .iso file..
Burn the image file using ImgBurner or any other image burning app that you have installed :)
When you download the rar file from rapidshare.com there are 2 rar folders:
* Winternals_ERD_Commander_2005
* Winternals_ERD_Commander_2007
Winternals_ERD_Commander_2005 RAR folder contains 2 uncompressed files:
1) Winternals ERD Commander 2005.ccd*
2) Winternals ERD Commander 2005.img*
Winternals_ERD_Commander_2007 RAR folder contains uncompressed file:
erd50.iso
When this is uncompressed using winrar, the extracted file extension of erd50 is rar type. Should it be erd50.iso after uncompress? How does one ensure this?
Should the ccd and img files be copied on to the CD too?
How does one proceed from here to make an ISO CD?

Okay first of all..I didn't upload Winternals ERD Commander 2007..I only uploaded Winternals ERD Commander 2005..Plus, I don't think so there is Winternals ERD Commander 2007 since the company was bought by Microsoft and the distribution has been stopped..
Second, you can't burn the image files as data burning mode..read this article, it explains how to burn an ISO file on to a CD correctly..

THanks for the file upload. Now I need help with Burning .img file into CD just like others.
I've burnt .img file CD twice using Nero and It doesn't work. I do know how to burn image files into CD either .iso or .img. But this one doesn't work. Do I need to do anything to the file before burning? The .img file size is 178 MB.
It's not accessible (when you browse CD there's nothing in side) and it's not bootable.

Try upload the .iso onto a Virtual Clone Drive (such as Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools to see the contents of file..

Thanks for posting but i think your image file has a serious issue.
I've burnt the cd using nero, activeiso, and imgburner and despite all three completeing successfully the resulting disks are not usable... Files can not be browsed nor will the system boot from the resulting cd..
As a last resort I used isobuster to extract the files and boot image from the disk image and then used these to create a new bootable cd in nero. The files were browseable and the problem pc did recognize the disk as bootable (did not happen when burning your iso) but I received an error during the boot process..
I guess I'm going to have to clean the office and see if I can find my missing erd commander cd.
I used PowerISO and it detected it as a bootable image and it works fine :)

I successfully created the bootable Winternals ERD commander 2005 using the links given here. Here i am very happy to say the procedure to all of you...
1. Just use the Rapidshare link to download the file..
2. Burn the file with the extension (*.img) using the software imageburn. Link is given here.

2. After completing the writing procedure just re-insert the cd into your drive and Just do the step given below with carefully...
3. In the menu bar, you will find "Change the drive volume name" like this.
4. change the name to ERD commander 2005.
5. Then eject the CD and re-insert it. Now you can browse the CD and see the files inside the CD. Now you can boot from the CD.
Try the steps 3, 4, 5, if you have written any disc before using the imageburn software.
Try this and expecting for your comments...

Thanks to dheepan. After several unsuccessful attempts using other software, I followed his procedure and am happy that I now have a working ERD disk. I had attempted to use Roxio to create the disk and that does not work. Image Burn works great!

Do download the rar file and uncompress it. You will find a nero image file (*.nrg). Burn it in a cd using nero software. I assure you that this is a working one...

I used imageburn and it worked I BELIEVE!!! I can see the files in there but they all ahve INTERNET EXPLORER ICONS!!! OOH YEA, that guy happen or whatever says just rename the DRIVE or something in the menu!!! WHAT MENU WHERE WHAT MENU!! PLEASE BE MORE SPECIFIC THERE"S NOTHING that says that WORD FOR WORD like you have it! That could be a number of things, 1. right click the NEWLY BURNED CD and Properties general then TRYING RENAMING but that DOESN'T WORK. Ummm The CHANGE VOLUME LABEL That DOESN'T WORK Cuz YOu fotta Choose the Files INSIDE the NEWLY BURNED DISK!!!! PLEASE HELP Thanks
it worked fine, and was able to use the locksmith with ease,
when you burn the image to a disk keep the file name the same (.img)
**DONT CHANGE THE FILE NAME** dont worry about the other files winrar extracts. insert the disk into your pc, restart your computer and it will boot the program itself.
