Gmail and Its New Features
Lately Gmail added 4 cool features such as IMAP, Group Chat with Emoticons, AIM added to chat and coming soon Colored Labels and Folders.
IMAP
Gmail now able to support IMAP for retrieving emails using third party email clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird.
IMAP is better for those who access emails from more than one device. As an example, if you use the same email account to retrieve your emails at work, home or while traveling, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.
Google recommends IMAP over POP3, so reconfigure your email clients to retrieve emails using IMAP. Instructions for your email client can be obtained here
Group Chat and Emoticons
You can now have group chat conversation at the same time. Group chat can be initiated by clicking on the Options link at the bottom of a conversation window. You will see "Group Chat" as a new option, just select that and type the name of the person you did like to add to your current conversation. If you cannot see the group chat option try signing out and logging in again.
Emoticons also have been introduced and there are three sets of emoticons - plain, round and square.
Adds AIM Supports to Chat
The new AOL Instant Messenger support lest you log into your AIM account to chat with your AIM friends right inside Gmail. To try it out you have got to be using the new version of Gmail in IE7 or Firefox 2. Sign into Chat and hit the Options menu to see the "Sign into AIM" option.
Colored Labels and Folders
The latest features to be included in Gmail is colored labels, which lets users easily categorize emails can recognize them based on label color.
You can assign colors for labels by clicking on the box next to each label in the sidebar.
